Fathom vs the Command Bar: reports from your books vs a board from your business

Fathom is a well-loved reporting tool, especially with accountants and advisors. It turns your accounting data into clean management reports, KPIs and forecasts. The Command Bar starts somewhere different: your register, your bank and your bills, every 30 minutes.

The short answer: if your accountant or advisor sends you monthly reports, Fathom is a great tool for them to build those reports with. If you want to see your own business every morning, sales, stock, cash and bills, with the three things to do this week, that's the Command Bar.

What Fathom does well

Fathom connects to QuickBooks, Xero and other accounting software and turns your books into management reports you'd be proud to hand a lender. It tracks KPIs against budget, builds three-way cash flow forecasts, runs what-if scenarios, consolidates multiple companies and now writes AI commentary for your reports. It starts at $59 a month for one company, and more than 110,000 businesses use it.

If you need formal reports, budgets and forecasts built on your books, Fathom is a strong, affordable choice. We'd rather say that up front.

Fathom reads your books, not your register

Everything in Fathom comes from your accounting software, synced daily. That means it's as current as your books, and your books are only as current as your bookkeeping. If transactions get categorized and reconciled once a month, so does the picture in Fathom.

It also means Fathom mostly sees what your books see: totals. Which products sold at which store yesterday, what to reorder, what to move between locations and how this Saturday compares with last year's live in your point of sale, not in your ledger.

Where the numbers come from: Fathom goes register, bookkeeper, accounting software, then a report synced daily from your books. The Command Bar goes from your register, bank and bills straight to your board every 30 minutes.

A report to read vs a board to run the day

Fathom is built for reporting: someone sets up the reports, the KPIs and the forecast, and the reports go out on a schedule. That someone is usually an accountant or advisor, and it's a good service.

The Command Bar is built for the owner. There's nothing for you to set up. Your board updates every 30 minutes, and every Monday a short memo tells you the three things to do this week.

When Fathom is the better choice

We'd rather tell you straight:

  • Your accountant or advisor already uses Fathom and sends you reports you read.
  • You need formal monthly reports, budgets or a three-way forecast for a lender or partners.
  • You run several companies and need them consolidated.

When the Command Bar is the better choice

  • You want to see your business every morning, not once a month.
  • You carry stock and need to know what to reorder and what to move.
  • You'd rather not build or read reports at all.
  • You want the numbers from your register, not just your books.

Use both

They can work side by side. Your accountant keeps building monthly reports and forecasts in Fathom from your books. You run the week from the Command Bar. When it's time for the monthly meeting, you already know what the report is going to say.

How setup works

  1. A short intake call. Tell us your systems, your stores and your bills, and we give you a go-live date.
  2. You connect your accounts with view-only access. We never ask for your passwords.
  3. We build your board and walk you through it. Billing for the month only starts when your board goes live.

If your accountant uses Fathom, keep it. Nothing in your books or their reports changes.

Questions

Is the Command Bar a Fathom alternative?

For the owner's day-to-day view, yes. For formal management reports, consolidations and three-way forecasts built from your books, Fathom does that job better.

Does the Command Bar connect to my accounting software like Fathom does?

Yes. QuickBooks Online is built and ready, and we switch it on during setup. The Command Bar also reads your point of sale and your bank directly, which Fathom doesn't.

Why is the Command Bar more expensive than Fathom?

Because we set it up for you and it covers more than your books: your register, stock, bank and bills, plus the Monday memo. Fathom is a reporting tool you or your accountant set up and run.

Can my accountant still use Fathom?

Yes. Nothing changes for them. They keep working from your books.

Does the Command Bar make reports for my bank?

No. It's built for running the business day to day. For formal lender reports, your accountant's tools, Fathom included, are the right fit.

What does it cost?

Core is $1,500 to set up and $199 a month. Full is $3,000 and $349 a month. That's launch pricing for our first ten businesses, locked for the first year. See plans
